The inspiration for cooking and making authentic Pakistani food actually came from our Nan, who everyone referred to as MaJee (meaning grandmother). MaJee taught us to appreciate our traditional cuisine from a very early age. In fact, when MaJee cooked the family dinner, we were often asked to chop the tomatoes or vegetables, marinate the meat, measure out the spices or simply keep an eye on the curry.
In all her cooking, Majee always worked with traditional herbs and spices, and the aromas wove their enchantment to produce food that was finger licking good! As both of us started to cook from a very early age, we found time to chat, share stories and learn from our grandmother’s experience – cooking really brought us all together. In the years that followed, we both grew to appreciate the personal dimension of our cultural cuisine life, where children are cherished and family ties form the central part of the whole cooking experience.
Today, our cuisine (often referred to as Indian), has found its way into the hearts (and stomachs) of every town and city in the UK. With its spicy sauces, colourful rice and delicious naans it’s now probably one of the most popular cuisines in the country. However, the truth of the matter is that although we all love a curry on a Friday or Saturday night, most of us have only experienced this type of food from our local restaurants. Food that we believe to be authentic, whereas in reality, most of the dishes on the menu are based on a couple of sauces spiced up with chillies or cooled down with yoghurt or cream. The resulting concoctions have only a tangential relationship with food as eaten in India or Pakistan.
Even though everyone is more exposed to these tastes, we still believe that the local restaurants don’t offer traditional cuisines and that there’s nothing better than cooking these yourself. With this in mind, we set out to produce a quick and easy way for everyone to cook our food and enjoy the wonderful tastes and aromas’ it has to offer.
Having learned the love of cooking from MaJee, we have tried to carry her appreciation forward in the formation of Spice Shots. With Spice Shots, you get traditional authentic curries that you can make in the comfort of your home quickly, easily and at a fraction of the restaurant prices.
